A 100,000-card domestic system

Chinese supercomputer manufacturer Sugon Information Industry Co. has unveiled the Sugon 8000, an AI supercluster built by interconnecting 100,000 computing cards. Its standout feature is that every card was developed in China.

The system was announced at the China National Annual Conference on High Performance Computing. Sugon, a spinoff from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, launched its first supercomputer in 1993.

What it does

The supercluster merges high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure with AI, letting users allocate computing resources according to task needs. It is connected to the National Supercomputing Internet, China's integrated computing network, making it accessible to industry, research institutes, individuals and private enterprises.

The limits of local production

Building a system at this scale is not just about aggregating chips; it also requires high-speed interconnects, liquid cooling, work scheduling and long-term stability. Sugon says it achieved all of these domestically.

Research use

Before the unveiling, the Sugon 8000 had already been deployed in more than 10 research applications spanning materials, celestial bodies, aerospace, agriculture, energy and meteorology. The developer team optimized more than 300 key applications across 30 research and industrial fields for the system.

Why it matters

It shows how far China can build its own AI infrastructure under export restrictions, a key signal for readers following the chip wars.
