Chips piling up in Hong Kong

Citing two people familiar with the matter, Reuters reports that roughly 600,000 Nvidia H200 AI chips are being held in Hong Kong. The reason is that Beijing has not approved large-scale imports into mainland China.

The H200 is one of Nvidia's data-center chips used for AI training and inference. A stockpile of this size sitting in Hong Kong points to a significant bottleneck in the supply chain.

No comment from the parties

According to the report, Nvidia did not respond to Reuters' request for comment. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and its main economic planning agency also did not comment.

Why it matters

China is one of the world's largest markets for AI chips. A delay in import approvals could affect both Nvidia's sales and Chinese AI companies' access to computing capacity. The details and the official stance are not yet clear.
