What happened
CesiumAstro, a maker of satellites and space communications systems, announced a $730M Series D round. The Austin-based company is valued at more than $4.5bn in the round, which was led by asset manager Janus Henderson.
The Synchronicity network
Alongside the funding, the company unveiled Synchronicity, a planned network of 737 satellites with AI built in. The network is aimed at commercial, sovereign and defence customers.
Why it matters
Satellite-based communications and observation infrastructure is a growing field as AI increases demand for collecting and moving data. A large funding round paired with a plan for hundreds of satellites shows competition in space communications is heating up.
