What launched

Meta has opened real-time voice chat and animated avatar features for its AI assistant Muse to users in the US. The feature was first introduced at Meta Connect 2026 in September and builds on the company's Muse Realtime Avatar and Muse Realtime Voice technologies.

How it works

Users can talk to Muse's avatar by voice and watch its reactions in real time. The avatar shows facial expressions, gestures and body language that match the tone of the conversation. Chat can be voice-only, or the avatar can be shown in the chat screen or in a full-screen mode.

Meta offers hundreds of voice options for Muse, and users can change the avatar's voice and style. The assistant can also keep the dialogue going when interrupted mid-conversation.

Limits

This is not a two-way video call in the classic sense: Muse's avatar does not see the user and instead listens to the voice to react. Voice responses are generally fast, though short pauses can occur while the assistant searches for information or performs a task. Avatar animations run in sync with the responses.

Where it is available

The feature is currently available in the US in the Muse app on mobile, web and Mac. Meta says the technology will also appear in its AI glasses and in Muse Charm, a wearable the company plans to release this year.

Why it matters

AI assistants are moving beyond text and voice toward personalized digital characters; Meta's move signals where the competition is heading.
