What was done
OpenAI, PerturbAI and Scripps Research set up a system of distributed AI agents to examine data from millions of brain cells. The goal was to surface promising leads that researchers might otherwise miss in such a large and complex biological dataset.
Why it matters
Biological datasets are growing fast in both size and complexity. It is becoming harder for individual researchers to scan all of it by hand. Running many agents in parallel is one way to make that scanning scale.
How the agents were used
The approach splits tasks across thousands of agents. Each agent examines a portion of the data, and the results are combined to produce candidate leads for research. OpenAI's announcement did not share detailed figures on the method or the scope of the results.
Limits
The announcement describes a research collaboration; no clinical result or product-ready application was disclosed. How widely the method spreads in biology research will become clearer with further work.
