The settlement's line item
Meta's third-quarter report, released Wednesday, showed the balance-sheet impact of its child safety settlement. The company paid $9.89 billion toward the deal; without it, operating income would have been $22.89 billion.
A $17.1 billion lawsuit
In August, Meta agreed to pay $17.1 billion to settle a nationwide lawsuit claiming it harmed children by making its social platforms "addictive" by design.
A conditional discount
Under the deal, Meta will pay only $5.3 billion of that amount if YouTube and TikTok adopt stricter settings and safeguards for kids, terms Meta also agreed to.
Why it matters
The figure shows how costly child safety regulation can be for large platforms. The deal's conditional structure could directly influence how other platforms handle child protection settings.
