Chipmakers take stakes in Meta
NVIDIA and AMD are preparing to invest a combined $4 billion in Meta as they expand their AI partnerships with the company. NVIDIA plans to buy $3 billion of Meta stock, while AMD's investment will be $1 billion.
The purchases are part of Meta's share sale, which could raise up to $95 billion to finance its data center buildout. Meta has said Broadcom has also expressed interest in buying shares; the three chipmakers' combined investment is expected to reach $5 billion. The first phase of the plan envisions $35 billion in transactions, with up to $60 billion more to be raised through sales starting in early 2027.
NVIDIA side: Vera Rubin and networking
The expanded NVIDIA partnership focuses on the training and inference performance of Meta's Muse AI assistant and its model family. Meta will increase its use of NVIDIA's Vera Rubin platform and Vera CPUs. On the networking side, Spectrum-X Ethernet solutions and BlueField-4 data processing units will be deployed. The companies will also explore collaboration on the OpenShell Reference Architecture for running AI agents securely.
AMD side: Helios servers and a custom GPU
The AMD deal broadens an existing partnership spanning CPUs, GPUs, networking and software. The first Helios server systems have been installed in Meta's infrastructure and are being tested. Meta will also use a custom GPU based on AMD's Instinct architecture, optimized for its own workloads. Meta is among the lead customers for sixth-generation EPYC processors, and work continues on PyTorch, Triton and ROCm on the software side.
