What happened
Anthropic has filed to go public and will trade under the ticker "ANT." According to the GeekWire analysis, bankers are reportedly valuing the company somewhere between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion.
The piece notes that even readers who never buy the stock directly may end up owning it, since index funds and ETFs will be required to buy shares within weeks of the debut.
Three variables behind the math
Etzioni reduces the valuation question to three unknowns:
- 2028 revenue: Anthropic told investors $195 billion; it currently runs at $67 billion a year. Meta's revenue is $243 billion.
- Profit margin: Anthropic's is 11% by its own accounting. Amazon sits at 14%, Meta at 31%, Apple and Alphabet at 33-34%, and NVIDIA at 66%.
- Profit multiple: Netflix trades at 17x, NVIDIA at 22x, Meta at 25x, Alphabet at 26x and Apple at 34x. Fast-growing stocks have traded at 50x and above.
Multiplying the three (revenue × margin × multiple) produces a valuation; the $2 trillion figure is the top of the reported range.
What the arithmetic leaves out
According to the piece, the math ignores two effects that roughly cancel out: a 2028 profit is worth about 17% less today than the same profit earned now, while Anthropic's $132 billion in cash adds roughly 7% to any result.
The text states plainly that this is simplified arithmetic, not investment advice.
