Publishers take Brave to court
The New York Times and a group of publishers including New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune and Orlando Sentinel have filed lawsuits against Brave Software, the company behind the Brave web browser. According to Reuters, the complaint alleges unlawful scraping to train AI models and allowing users to bypass paywalls.
The Brave Index and paid access
The complaint claims Brave monetizes its index of scraped websites by providing AI companies with paid access to "real-time online content from the Brave Index." Those companies then use the index to train models, respond to user queries or for other purposes. Publishers argue this commercial model profits from their content.
Paywall dispute
Another part of the complaint focuses on Brave allegedly letting users circumvent news sites' paywalls, which publishers say undermines subscription revenue. The case adds to the broader legal debate over AI training data and copyright.
