What was announced?

OpenAI has launched a national programme called Grid Protectors, aimed at reducing the pressure its data centres put on electricity grids. The company says its future campuses will cut power use when grids are under strain.

Georgia as the pilot

The first deployment will be OpenAI's planned campus in Georgia, where it expects up to 1,000MW of flexible demand. In practice, the data centre can flex its consumption to give the grid breathing room when needed.

Why it matters

AI data centres have been driving a rapid rise in electricity demand. "Flexible demand" means the consumer side reduces usage at moments of need, which can help grid operators keep the balance without firing up extra plants.

Limited scope

OpenAI did not name any site beyond Georgia. Details and a timeline for the programme remain unclear.
