What happened
Binance said the hackers who stole billions of dollars in cryptocurrency from the exchange spent months planning the theft, using both social engineering and novel malware.
The numbers
The heist initially targeted $6.34 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance wallets. The exchange has since frozen or intercepted $2.85 billion of that sum. Binance said it has set aside funds to cover the loss and shared a Proof of Reserves page.
Timeline
According to the company, the attackers began no later than June and continued until last Thursday, when they compromised an engineer's laptop and withdrew assets from several wallets. Binance described the threat actor as an advanced persistent threat (APT).
Who is responsible
The FBI and security firm TRM Security attribute the heist to North Korean actors. The $6.34 billion figure represents the largest sum ever targeted in a cryptocurrency theft.
