What happened

SpaceX is partnering with Qualcomm on a multi-year deal to build its nationwide mobile network in the US. Under the agreement, Qualcomm's Dragonwing cellular infrastructure technology will be used at "tens of thousands" of 5G cell sites across the country, with the first deployments set for 2027.

Why it matters

SpaceX wants to turn Starlink Mobile into a "major" US carrier competing directly with T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon. The company has already acquired a swath of spectrum, and recent reports suggested it was exploring an acquisition of Boost Mobile.

What is Dragonwing?

Dragonwing is the name of Qualcomm's cellular infrastructure product line, covering the hardware and software carriers use to build base stations and network equipment. Bringing it into SpaceX's network is part of the company's push to combine satellite service with terrestrial mobile coverage.

The bigger picture

SpaceX has so far stood out in direct-to-phone satellite connectivity. The Qualcomm deal shows it is also investing in ground-based 5G infrastructure, moving into territory traditionally held by established carriers. With deployments starting in 2027, the commercial impact is still some way off.
