What happened
Sierra, the AI customer service startup led by Bret Taylor, has partnered with payments company Stripe to let its voice agents accept card payments during phone calls.
How the payment works
Customers type their card number on the phone keypad, and the data is sent directly to Stripe. That means card details do not pass through the agent's conversation flow.
Who is using it
Cedar, a healthcare billing firm, is among the early users. The setup points to a model where voice agents do more than answer questions: they can complete a transaction.
Why it matters
Voice AI agents have so far mostly handled answering questions and routing calls. Adding a payment step ties the customer interaction directly to revenue, while routing card data through Stripe keeps sensitive details out of the agent layer.
