Early-stage talks
According to a report by Valida Pau and Amir Efrati in The Information, OpenAI is in preliminary talks to acquire Trail of Bits, a company that identifies and fixes security vulnerabilities in open-source software. The discussions are said to be at an early stage.
Prior collaboration
The two companies launched a joint project in June aimed at fixing open-source software. At the time, OpenAI said Trail of Bits had committed its entire security research organization to the effort.
Why it matters
Open-source software is widely used in the infrastructure behind AI systems. Such an acquisition could be seen as part of OpenAI's push to strengthen the security of both its own products and the broader ecosystem. However, the deal is not yet finalized and the talks may not lead to an agreement.
