A stark warning from analysts
In an assessment published on 14 October, Gartner said a significant share of spending on AI infrastructure could face write-downs. Analyst Will Sommer told Bloomberg that providers all want to be full-stack, but they can't all be.
What the numbers say
According to Gartner, more than $3.5tn of AI infrastructure spending faces possible impairment by the end of 2030 if providers keep spending at their current pace. A write-down occurs when an asset's book value falls below its market value, forcing companies to record a loss on their balance sheets.
Why it matters
Massive investment in AI data centers has moved both share prices and debt markets in recent months. Gartner's warning puts the question of whether that spending will translate into returns back on the agenda. The competitive pressure the analyst points to means not every provider will earn the same scale of profit.
