OpenAI models on a rival's platform

OpenAI is bringing its frontier models and its Codex coding agent to Google Cloud. According to Google, GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are now available in private preview in Google Cloud's Model Garden.

Who gets access

Select enterprise customers will be the first to use the models during the preview phase. OpenAI plans general availability in the coming weeks, which would put the models in front of a broader enterprise audience through Google Cloud infrastructure.

Why it matters

OpenAI and Google are direct competitors in AI models and cloud services. Moving OpenAI's models onto a rival's cloud platform makes it easier for enterprise customers to choose models without being tied to a single cloud provider. Model Garden acts as a catalog that hosts models from multiple providers in one place.

Limited details

The announcement did not include pricing, regional availability or technical details about the models. The terms for using Codex on Google Cloud also remain unclear.
