Vera Rubin comes to OCI

NVIDIA and Oracle announced plans to expand Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Superclusters with NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 systems to multi-gigawatt scale, aimed at growing demand for AI training, inference and agentic applications.

NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 and NVIDIA Vera CPUs are also now generally available on OCI. That lets customers scale CPU-intensive work and GPU-heavy training separately, reducing idle capacity.

Why it matters

AI agents don't just generate responses; they call tools, run code and retrieve data. Slow CPU work can leave GPUs waiting between model calls. Vera CPUs pair high single-thread performance with memory bandwidth to speed up those tasks.

OCI Superclusters combine NVL72 rack-scale systems, which link 72 GPUs via NVLink, with Oracle Acceleron networking, NVIDIA Spectrum-X Ethernet and BlueField-4 DPUs. Oracle also plans to introduce NVIDIA HGX Rubin NVL8, an x86-based server with eight Rubin GPUs.

OpenAI said it trained and served GPT-6 Astra on an OCI Supercluster with more than 100,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs in Abilene. NVIDIA notes its common CUDA software foundation helps customers move across hardware generations.

Why it matters

The AI infrastructure race is scaling up; this matters for readers tracking where cloud costs and model-training capacity are heading.
