What's happening
Australia is moving to enforce its ban on social media use for children under 16 by taking platforms to court. Communications Minister Anika Wells told Bloomberg that Meta, TikTok, Snap and Google's YouTube would face legal action.
Which services are targeted?
Wells named five services: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and YouTube. Meta appears twice on the list through Facebook and Instagram.
Who is running the process?
eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant is leading the case. According to Wells, Grant is drawing on new regulatory powers to prepare it. At the center is whether the companies have met their obligations under the ban.
Why it matters
Australia is putting one of the toughest regimes on age verification and children's online safety into practice. The legal process could set a precedent for how global platforms enforce age limits.
