Memory crunch at Apple

In an interview with TIME, Apple CEO John Ternus described the memory chip supply situation as a crisis. Referring to reports that Apple has tested Chinese-made memory, Ternus said "all options should be on the table."

First big test for the new CEO

Ternus became Apple's CEO on 1 September. He appears on the cover of TIME's 2026 Best Inventions issue alongside the iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable phone.

Why it matters

Memory chip supply affects costs and production schedules across products, from smartphones to data centers. Apple's sourcing choices could influence Chinese manufacturers' position in the market and global memory prices.
