Amazon's AI investment weighs on cash flow
Amazon is buying NVIDIA's GB300 racks before the supporting infrastructure is ready. According to a report cited by Wccftech, the company received $5 billion in GB300 deliveries in August, with shipments continuing at $3 billion per month afterward.
The racks are reportedly not yet matched by available power infrastructure. In other words, Amazon has committed to large-scale hardware purchases before the data center capacity to run the chips is in place.
Free cash flow turns negative
The financial impact has been sharp: the company's free cash flow has turned negative. The AWS CFO says they do not expect the picture to improve for a couple more years. This is a concrete example of how massive AI infrastructure spending shows up on balance sheets.
What it means for the sector
Amazon's situation shows that the AI infrastructure race is not only a technology challenge but also a cash flow management problem. Companies are placing billions of dollars in hardware orders for future capacity while the returns on those investments arrive with a delay.
