Details of the bond sale

Google's parent company Alphabet began selling €6 billion (about $6.7 billion) of bonds on Monday. According to Reuters, the sale is split into seven tranches: one floating-rate note and six fixed-rate notes. Maturities range from two to 19 years.

Why it matters for the market

The sale is seen as the first major test of demand for tech company debt after worries about AI spending shook markets last week. Investors are closely watching how much appetite they have for Alphabet's bonds despite questions over the returns on AI investments.

AI spending and borrowing

Major tech companies have recently committed billions of dollars to data centers and AI infrastructure. These expenditures are partly financed through borrowing. Alphabet's bond sale stands out as the latest example of this trend.
