Electromagnetic protection and imaging together

Sivas University of Science and Technology is developing a new coating for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and armed UAVs under a project called the "Invisible Shield Project." The goal is to protect these aircraft against electromagnetic interference.

Transparency is key

The distinguishing feature of the coating is that it stays transparent while providing protection. This is expected to allow cameras and sensors on the aircraft to keep capturing imagery. Since electromagnetic shields are typically made from opaque materials, combining imaging with protection is a technically demanding target.

Why it matters

UAVs and armed UAVs depend on electronic systems for both imaging and communication in the field. Electromagnetic interference can disrupt these systems and render an aircraft ineffective. A transparent protective layer could help the vehicle both survive and carry out its mission.
