A contradiction on America.gov
The Trump administration has launched America.gov, an AI-powered site that lets users retrieve information about the federal government through a chatbot. But the bot quickly began giving answers that clashed with the administration's official line.
What it said
- It attributed the 2020 presidential election result to "Joseph R. Biden Jr. won, Donald J. Trump lost," citing the Federal Election Commission and other official documents.
- It labeled as false Trump's claim that 25 million immigrants crossed the border illegally under Biden.
- It said consumer prices are going up, not down.
- It said Americans, not foreign companies, pay for Trump's tariffs.
The White House response
White House officials said the service will be updated with more resources and the "most accurate information from the federal government." The bot later began deflecting questions about the 2020 election with a boilerplate response: "I do not discuss political questions or election outcomes."
Why it matters
The episode shows how slippery AI-driven information delivery can be: models can be steered to push certain views, yet they also struggle to stay on script. The neutrality and oversight of AI tools used in public services is back in the spotlight.
