What happened

OpenAI announced that an AI model it developed has refuted the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH). The company says the hypothesis had been widely believed to be true.

ETH is a foundational assumption about computational hardness in computer science. In short, it holds that solving certain problems requires time that grows extremely fast. Hundreds of academic papers rest on it.

Two more results the same day

OpenAI also announced two further results, one in mathematics and one in physics. Details are in the company's blog post.

Why it matters

The claim that an AI model has overturned one of the field's core assumptions could reignite debate over automated mathematics and scientific discovery. The claim still needs independent expert verification.
