A notable admission in the IPO filing
In the S-1 filing it submitted to the US Securities and Exchange Commission as part of its IPO process, Anthropic openly addressed the energy vulnerability of AI data centers. According to the company, competition for access to electrical supply and data center locations with adequate power availability is "intense."
Natural gas dependence
The filing acknowledges that data centers are becoming increasingly reliant on "natural gas" — primarily methane. This dependence leaves Anthropic's AI infrastructure buildout exposed to rising fuel costs and existing supply chain constraints.
A possible catch-22
The company also flags a scenario in which rising energy costs could affect its own growth. Building more AI capacity requires more energy, and as energy costs rise, the cost of that growth rises with it.
Why it matters
The hidden front in the AI race is now energy. As massive data centers rapidly increase electricity demand, how companies meet that demand is becoming a critical question for both cost and climate. Anthropic's filing shows this issue has entered the official risk factors of an AI company.
