What was announced?
Elon Musk said Neuralink's second product, Blindsight, is "ready from an engineering standpoint" and is "just waiting on regulatory approval." According to Musk, the device will enable even those who are completely blind or have never seen to see. The statement was posted on X on October 30, 2026.
How Blindsight works
Neuralink's first product, Telepathy, sends brain signals outward so users can control computers with their thoughts. Blindsight works in the opposite direction: a camera captures visual images, and the signals are converted through a brain-computer interface (BCI) into something the brain can understand. The goal is an artificial visual pathway.
Where things stand
Neuralink was founded in 2016 but only began human trials in 2024. The company has advanced since then, with patients shown playing games and controlling devices via a brain implant. Blindsight has not yet been approved; Musk's claim remains unverified.
The wider field
Neuralink is not alone in the BCI race. Meta is developing a non-invasive magnetoencephalography scanner that turns thoughts into keypresses, while China's NeuroXess is accelerating toward human trials. Devices like cochlear implants already send signals from sensors into the brain; Blindsight's difference is aiming to do this for vision.
