What is changing?

Microsoft said it is adding new capabilities to Microsoft Sovereign Cloud, its offering for government agencies and heavily regulated companies. CEO Satya Nadella made the announcement in Paris.

More control over access

The new controls give customers more say over who can reach their systems. That matters especially for public institutions worried about their data being exposed to foreign authorities or third parties.

AI on your own hardware

Microsoft is also letting customers run more AI tools on their own hardware, meaning offline. This allows models to run without sensitive data leaving the cloud environment.

Why it matters

Cloud sovereignty sits at the centre of public procurement and regulation, particularly in Europe. Microsoft's move can be read as an effort by a US-based cloud provider to answer European customers' demands for data sovereignty.
