Rising energy demand
Amazon is turning to nuclear power to meet the growing electricity needs of its AI data centers. The company's plan calls for building a plant made up of 12 small modular reactors (SMRs) in the US.
A 960 MW target
The facility is targeted to generate a total of 960 MW of electricity. Small modular reactors are units that can be built at a smaller scale and in a modular fashion compared with conventional large nuclear plants.
Why it matters
Training and running AI models consumes large amounts of electricity in data centers. Amazon's move is part of a broader push by companies in the sector to diversify energy sources and secure long-term supply.
