The hidden side of ordinary-looking tools

According to a WIRED investigation, around 400 apps and websites linked to Chinese-language developers look like regular AI tools at first glance. Behind the scenes, however, these tools contain hidden features that allow users to generate violent AI images and videos.

Sexually abusive deepfakes

The hidden features open the door to sexually abusive deepfake content. A deepfake is an image or video in which a person's face or voice is inserted into another visual using artificial intelligence. When produced without consent, such content can cause serious psychological and social harm to victims.

Why it matters

The number and spread of the apps show the problem is not limited to a single platform. The fact that tools available in ordinary app stores harbor hidden functions points to inadequate oversight and moderation. Producing and distributing such content can carry legal liability in many countries.

What should be done

Experts say app stores and platforms need stricter checks to detect these hidden features. Users are also advised to pay attention to the permissions and privacy policies of the apps they download.
