Two options, one outcome

Google announced it will cut off Google Search access for schools that restrict AI use. According to Chris Phillips, the company's VP of education, search and AI can no longer be separated: students at a school that disables AI features will not have access to search and will instead see a message indicating the school's restriction.

The choices offered to schools

Google is leaving education institutions with two paths: search with AI Overviews turned on, or a student-oriented version of its Gemini chatbot called Guided Learning. The company has been marketing Gemini to schools as a way to help teachers and provide personalized tutors to students.

Educators push back

Google made its AI features the default in classrooms earlier this year, triggering a major outcry among educators. Several school districts in New York and California had restricted some features to regain access to traditional search without AI Overviews; that option now appears to be off the table.

Regulatory uncertainty

The news comes as state regulators continue to debate rules for AI use in public education and by minors. Google's move could further inflame the debate over AI in schools.
