First TPU in space

Google's first data center satellite is online. The satellite carries a TPU (Tensor Processing Unit), Google's custom chip for AI computations.

Gemma 4 is running

The TPU aboard is running Google DeepMind's Gemma 4 model. One of the model's first tasks was writing poetry; according to TechCrunch, the results were not particularly good.

Why it matters

Moving data centers to space is the first concrete step toward making AI compute independent of energy and infrastructure constraints on Earth. With this experiment, Google is testing how running models in space works in practice.
