China spends a record $583 billion on science and tech as US proposes research cuts
China raised R&D spending by 8.2% in 2025 to more than $583 billion, with basic research up 13.3%. The figures contrast with the Trump administration's proposed 2026 budget cuts of 39% for the NIH and 55% for the NSF. Beijing is directing the money toward semiconductors, AI and other strategic technologies.
