A $50bn plan for Malaysia

SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son has picked Malaysia for $50bn of investment in AI, new technology and data centres. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim made the plan public.

Anwar said Son told him about the intention during a video call on Tuesday. He spoke on Saturday at the launch of a national cost of living plan in Malacca.

Why it matters

The size of the commitment shows the AI infrastructure race is not limited to the US and Europe. Data centres underpin the computing capacity needed to train and run AI models.

Details remain scarce

The announcement did not specify the timeframe, which projects would receive the money or how it would be financed. SoftBank has not issued a further statement.
