What happened
An analysis of Nvidia's filings by The Information found that the company has made financial commitments exceeding $170bn to neoclouds and other large customers. The report follows comments from CEO Jensen Huang to CNBC, as relayed by Business Insider.
What is a neocloud?
Neoclouds are newer cloud providers that rent out GPU capacity specifically for AI training and inference, rather than offering the broad range of services sold by traditional hyperscalers. They typically buy Nvidia's latest chips in large volumes and lease them to customers.
Huang: demand is "off the charts"
Huang told CNBC that demand for neoclouds is "off the charts". The Information also reported that Nvidia is in talks to back one neocloud.
Why it matters
The $170bn commitment shows how dependent Nvidia's chip sales have become on this new class of customer. It also highlights that growth in the AI infrastructure market rests heavily on these companies' ability to raise financing.
