Politics and elections on Claude
Anthropic said it has strengthened its election safeguards ahead of the 2026 US midterms. Using Anthropic Insights, the company analyzed 250,000 conversations over a one-week period. It found that about 5.75% of conversations on Claude.ai in the United States touched on politics, public policy or social issues, while election- and voting-specific chats made up 0.51%.
What users ask
According to the analysis, people rarely ask Claude whom or what to vote for; such requests appeared in about 0.01% of US conversations. Users more often ask questions that help them reach their own conclusions, such as where candidates stand on an issue. Requests that violated election integrity policies appeared in about 0.002% of conversations.
Pointing to trusted sources
As Election Day approaches, Anthropic added two new ways to surface reliable information. When users ask about voter registration, polling places or election dates, a banner linking to TurboVote, a nonpartisan resource from Democracy Works, will continue to appear. Later this month, Claude will start drawing official voting information from Democracy Works into its responses for US users.
Why it matters
Someone asking where to vote or what ID to bring can now get an answer specific to their state without leaving the conversation. The responses draw on publicly available information that Democracy Works collects from state and local election sources.
