Capacity already booked

Samsung's Taylor Fab 2 facility in Texas has had much of its 2nm production capacity reserved before construction has even begun. Most of the orders reportedly come from AMD.

Why HBM matters

HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) is a specialized memory placed alongside AI accelerators that directly determines chip performance in data centers. It is hard to manufacture and supply is limited, so capacity deals are struck years in advance.

Timing

According to the report, 2nm HBM production is expected to start in 2030. This can be read as AMD securing its long-term memory supply early.

What it means for the industry

Memory supply has become one of the most critical bottlenecks in AI chips. The early booking of Samsung's new fab capacity signals that HBM demand will remain high in the coming years.
