Spending isn't stopping
The four biggest players in the AI race — Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta — reported quarterly results late last month, and the picture is clear: they plan to spend at least $720 billion on capital expenditures this year. Most of that will go toward AI data centers.
Returns still elusive
Despite the scale of the spending, the investments appear no closer to delivering their promised returns. On top of this year's outlay, there are already at least $1 trillion in prior spending commitments.
No slowdown in sight
None of the companies is expected to slow down on its own. The Verge's assessment is that only an outside intervention could stop the buildout.
What it means for readers
This directly shapes the cost structure of AI services and the industry's future. Massive infrastructure spending drives demand for chips and data centers and influences how investors view AI spending.
