Over $1 trillion in off-balance-sheet commitments
Alphabet's quarterly filing, published Thursday, shows that the company's future payments for computing power, energy and data centers total more than $1 trillion. According to the filing, these commitments do not appear on its balance sheet.
Where the numbers came from
Chief financial officer Anat Ashkenazi first disclosed the total publicly on Wednesday's earnings call. Davey Alba reported the figures for Bloomberg.
Why it matters
Such commitments show the scale of the long-term liability the company has taken on for AI infrastructure. Keeping them off the balance sheet may make it harder for investors to assess the company's true financial risk.
