What the live pilot does
Visa, BILL and Billtrust announced a live pilot in which AI agents pay approved supplier invoices from start to finish. The agents make the payments through suppliers' own payment portals.
The three companies describe it as the first live pilot of its kind. Until now, many of those portals required an employee to log in and enter the details by hand.
Why it matters
Invoice payment remains one of the steps in business that still relies heavily on human labor. Agents being able to pay through a portal points to automating that step.
The pilot is one of the few live examples of AI agents not just generating text but triggering real money movement. That also raises questions about authorization, approval and audit.
