Meta's massive AI bet
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company committed as much as $200 billion to AI infrastructure, adding that no one could tell him at the time whether the investment would pay off. According to Zuckerberg, the outcome was far from certain when the spending decisions were made.
Meta's chief AI officer also said it was not clear at all in the early stages. In other words, Meta made its enormous infrastructure spending as a bet on an uncertain future.
The balance sheet impact
The cost of that spending is now visible in the financials: Meta's free cash flow fell 91% in the second quarter. Free cash flow is the difference between the cash a company generates from operations and its capital expenditures.
Why it matters
Meta's situation illustrates how large and how uncertain the spending has become in the big tech AI race. Even though the return on investment is not yet proven, companies are choosing not to fall behind in the infrastructure race.
