What is Xbox Labs?

Microsoft has created Xbox Labs, a new unit aimed at getting games to more people on more devices, with a particular focus on web browsers. The company has been experimenting with running Xbox and Xbox 360 games in browsers, and Xbox Labs formalizes those efforts.

What will the team do?

The unit will consist of a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists. Their job is to find new ways for new and old games to be distributed and even created. According to IGN, this won't just be an R&D effort; the team is tasked with shipping products.

Why now?

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma points to the rapid pace of games being decompiled and rebuilt to run on hardware they were never designed for, and to growing browser support for technologies like WebAssembly and WebGPU. She notes that people spend more than 72 billion hours a year playing Xbox games, framing this as a major opportunity after AI agents.

Monetization unclear

How Xbox Labs will make money is still unclear. Options include an upfront cost, in-game microtransactions or ad-based revenue. The announcement follows last week's reveal of Xbox XP, an entertainment-focused arm.
