AI pledge at the White House
Five American technology companies pledged a total of $2.4B in AI tools and compute credits for federal science research at a summit held at the White House. The credits are intended for public research institutions to train and run AI models.
Who is giving what?
- Nvidia: $1B
- Google: $150M (smallest share)
- The other three companies also contribute to the total pledge
What happened the same day
On the day the pledges were announced, the same administration suspended Microsoft from a residency programme hours earlier. The UK regulator also named three of the five donor companies that morning.
The development shows the growing role of the private sector in public science's access to AI infrastructure in the US.
