Waymo turns to debt for the first time

Waymo, Alphabet's autonomous driving unit, has secured a $5 billion loan from Blackstone and PIMCO to expand its robotaxi service. The company had previously been funded entirely through equity, making this its first debt financing.

Why it matters

Robotaxi operations are capital-intensive: vehicle fleets, sensor hardware and city-by-city permits all require heavy investment. Waymo's move into debt markets signals an intent to accelerate its growth plans.

Where it stands

Waymo is one of the most mature players offering commercial robotaxi rides in the US. The new financing could support expansion into new cities and larger fleets.
