NHTSA opens review

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a defect petition review into claims that Tesla robotaxis exceeded posted speed limits in active school zones. The review covers roughly 1,000 vehicles.

No crashes or injuries reported

So far there have been no reported crashes or injuries. The review is a process to assess whether the claims hold up.

Europe approval also stalled by speeding

The speeding issue is not limited to the US. The same concern is cited as the main obstacle holding up Tesla's bid for EU-wide approval of its driver-assistance software.

Why it matters

Safety is the top focus for regulators when it comes to autonomous driving and driver-assistance systems. NHTSA stepping in could affect the timeline for Tesla's robotaxi and driver-assistance plans.
