What happened?
Turkcell and TÜBİTAK are running a strategic collaboration focused on 6G technologies. As part of this effort, locally developed smart surface prototypes were successfully tested under real field conditions.
What is a smart surface?
A smart surface (reconfigurable intelligent surface) uses many small antenna elements to steer signals. The goal is to improve the link between a base station and a device, especially in spots where the signal is weak.
Why it matters
6G is a next-generation mobile communications technology whose standards are still being defined. Passing a field test with domestic prototypes shows that Türkiye's R&D work in this area has moved beyond the lab stage.
