What was announced?
US President Donald Trump signaled a mandate requiring AI data centers to pay a "dividend" to the local communities where they operate, in a post on Truth Social. Trump wants data centers not only to generate their own electricity but also to give or sell excess energy to the local community.
Why it matters
Across the US, small communities are protesting AI data centers over rising electricity costs, noise pollution, water shortages, air pollution and deforestation. The Trump administration sees giving something back to local residents as a way to stay ahead of China in the AI race.
How it might work
Given the post's focus on energy, the dividend could take the form of partially covering rising electricity costs. A previously passed act already orders data centers to shoulder the cost of grid upgrades. Trump said data centers that were "highly unpopular in a certain area have become extremely popular when a financial deal is struck," urging more deals to get them built.
Uncertainties remain
Whether dividends will be enough to win over communities is unclear, as the economic aspect is only one facet of the problem. Water consumption, ecological damage and pollution remain major challenges that make AI data centers a hard sell wherever they are located.
