What was announced?
South Korea is launching a government-backed investment program to build its own frontier AI model. The total size is 4.7 trillion won, roughly $3.49 billion.
The approach
The investment is planned as equity rather than direct grants, meaning the state would take a stake in the company or consortium developing the model.
The goal
The aim is to produce a homegrown frontier model that can compete with China's best. This can be read as an effort to reduce dependence on foreign AI and position the country in the global race.
Why it matters
Building frontier models requires massive compute and long-term funding. South Korea's move is an example of a new era in which governments put capital directly into the AI race.
