First implant completed

Science Corporation has implanted its PRIMA chip, aimed at restoring vision lost to retinal disease, in its first Stargardt disease patient. Stargardt is an inherited retinal condition that causes vision loss at a young age.

Hodak: this is a BCI journey

The company is led by Max Hodak, former president and co-founder of Neuralink. On stage at TechCrunch Disrupt, Hodak said the work with PRIMA is part of the company's path toward a next-generation brain-computer interface (BCI).

Why it matters

Brain-computer interfaces have so far been discussed mostly through lab work and animal studies. Placing PRIMA in a patient marks one of the concrete steps this technology is taking toward clinical use. The company has not yet shared detailed results on how much vision the chip helps restore.
