What happened?

Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance announced they will invest a combined USD 1 billion in AI infrastructure company Helix Digital Infrastructure. Helix was established by global investment firm KKR and launched in June 2026.

What Helix does

Helix aims to deliver integrated solutions across the entire AI infrastructure value chain: hyperscale data center development and operations, power generation (covering both baseload and flexible energy sources), transmission and distribution infrastructure, and fiber-optic networks. The company's goal is to help hyperscalers rapidly secure the large-scale infrastructure needed to keep pace with exponentially growing AI demands.

Leadership and other investors

Helix is led by Adam Selipsky, former CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS), and is assembling a management team of experts from the data center and power industries. Alongside Samsung, KKR, the Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA), NVIDIA and US power company Vistra are also founding investors in Helix.

Why it matters

AI data centers are evolving beyond simple facility investments into platforms that combine business models such as GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS), Sovereign AI and colocation services. This growth is creating a multi-sector ecosystem spanning power generation, cooling technologies, semiconductors and finance. Helix plans to rapidly secure energy capacity through direct investments and strategic partnerships with major energy developers, including investor Vistra.

Samsung's role

Samsung Electronics' Device Solutions (DS) Division supports the global AI buildout with its semiconductor solutions, while the Device eXperience (DX) Division offers a broad portfolio of data center cooling products — from air cooling to coolant distribution units (CDUs) for liquid cooling — through FläktGroup, its data center HVAC specialist subsidiary acquired in 2025. With 14 production sites and a supply and service network across 65 countries, the company aims to meet hyperscalers' demands for rapid capacity expansion. Through this investment, Samsung aims to move from a traditional hardware component supplier to an active architect of the global AI infrastructure ecosystem.

Why it matters

This move shows the AI race is now shaped by data center and power infrastructure as much as by models, offering a strong signal of where tech giants will focus next.
