Pentagon drops Anthropic
Palantir's chief technology officer, Shyam Sankar, said on CBS's Face the Nation that the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) has stopped using Anthropic's AI models and moved to a replacement. According to Sankar, the change caused no operational disruption.
The dispute behind it
The Pentagon had classified Anthropic as a supply chain risk following a disagreement over safeguards for military AI use. After that designation, the department stopped using the company's products.
Why it matters
Which providers the US military relies on for critical AI infrastructure is closely watched by both the defense and AI industries. A lab being pushed out of the defense supply chain over its safety policies sets a precedent for other players in the sector.
